Sumer Energy Savings Tips

With summer temperatures rising so does the demand for electricity. First Electric Cooperative would like to remind its members to keep the following tips in mind, to help reduce the load, when considering energy usage between the hours of 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

  • Keep thermostats set at 78 degrees or higher. Consider investing in a programmable thermostat. They can save up to $180 a year, according the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Operate ceiling fans. Not only do they use less electricity but they can make higher temperature settings feel more comfortable. Fans can make a room feel between 4 to 8 degrees cooler and use less electricity than a 100 watt light bulb.
  • When using window units, keep doors closed to unused rooms.
  • Close blinds, drapes and shades during the hottest part of the day.
  • Use exhaust fan in kitchen when cooking. If possible, consider using microwave or counter appliances as an alternative to the oven.
  • Postpone laundry and dishwashing until nighttime to avoid generating additional heat.
  • Check air filters to ensure they are clean. They should be replaced monthly.
  • Turn the lights off when you exit a room.
