Surge & Lightning Protection

What You Don't Know About
Surge and Lightning Protection Will Shock You

Lightning and power surges can strike at any moment and can destroy or cause expensive damage to your sensitive electronics and appliances. Being prepared for these unexpected surges and spikes can make a big difference in protecting your appliances and equipment.

Lightning is often the cause of power surges, but other factors such as birds, squirrels and trees interfering with power lines can cause a power surge. Construction work, demand fluctuations in your home, auto accidents involving utility poles, and even disturbances transmitted through telephone and cable lines can have the same effect.

A comprehensive surge and lightning protection program can help eliminate the risk of costly damage.  Complete protection comes in two stages.

Stage 1:  Installation of a meter socket surge protector

This device is installed at your meter and protects major household appliances such as refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers, freezers and heating and cooling equipment.  There is no installation fee and the cost is only $5.00 per month with a 12 month minimum signed agreement.  The charge will appear on your monthly electric bill.

Stage 2:  Installation of point- of- use surge protectors inside your home

These surge protectors are designed to protect sensitive electronic equipment such as televisions, computers, DVDs, microwave ovens or anything that uses a microprocessor.  When coax and phone lines are connected to electronic equipment, they too should be connected to a point-of-use surge protector with the necessary coax and phone line connections for your specific piece of electronic equipment.  Prices for point-of-use surge protectors start at $25.00 and are available at any local First Electric office and may be added to your electric bill with approved payment history.
